Since 2006 The Big Blue Experience has been running winter holidays to the quiet Valais region of the Swiss Alps. Tucked away on the edge of the Italian / Swiss border, the quiet town of Brig and its picturesque surrounding villages provide us with the backdrop for exceptional skiing, snowboarding, and snow kiting.
The hotel from which we operate is located only a 2 hour breathtaking train journey from Geneva or Milan and lies within the little hamlet of Brei, which is only 15 minutes from Brig. From here we have easy access to 8 ski fields, 4 snow kiting areas various restaurants and bars, woodland walks, cross country ski tracks and the beautiful mountain vistas that Switzerland has to offer.
Whether you are looking to improve your skiing, learn to snow kite, tackle forests of off-piste wilderness or leave only footprints with friends over fresh terrain, The Big Blue Experience can really create a magical break for all ages and abilities.
Building your itinerary is the first step towards joining us in the snow. Together we shall create a long weekend or indeed a week’s worth of white memories. Simply get in touch to check availability, book your flights/trains and we shall organise the rest.
Below is an example of a long B&B weekend away with The Big Blue Experience.
||Arrive at Brig train station. Quick shop for essentials - chocolate, cheese, local salamis and Valais wine. Transfer to the hotel. Once settled in we will head for supper in the mountain side village of Rosswald, where the only way to get back to the hotel is via the 45 minute ski out on toboggans. This is a truly magical way to get home especially if the moon is full and the snow sitting heavily on the trees.
||Breakfast in the hotel. Jumping in to the Big Blue van we will make the jaw dropping 20 minute drive to the Simplon. At 2005 metres above sea level the Simplon is an exceptional snow kiting mountain pass. Large flat open areas are ideal for novices (instruction will see you whizzing back and forth in a few hours) whilst rolling hills, gullies and wind lips provide a snow park fit for the more advanced. All kit can be hired and if snow kiting is not for the entire group, snow shoes offer an opportunity to get off the beaten track. At the end of the day the hotel sauna eases aching limbs and the fully equipped communal kitchen and dining area is ready for your use.
||Breakfast at the hotel before once again setting off in the Big Blue van with a quick stop for fresh bread from the local bakery. The destination for the day is Belalp, a medium sized ski area with a wide variety of runs suitable for all abilities and great open off-piste. Although not particularly well known this means Belalp is generally cheaper and much quieter with few queues. Warming gluwein (mulled wine) can be enjoyed at any number of mountainside cafes and restaurants and the ski out back to the van is exceptionally long and windy. The evening is spent in the award winning restaurant Zer Mili, a short stumble from the hotel.
||After breakfast at the hotel we will head to the ski area of Fiesch. Fiesch is another local resort that hugs the northern sunny side of the Rhone valley. Although not vast there are plenty of fun slopes for all abilities and ages, one of the highlights is the restaurant at the top of the Fieschhorn which provides incredible views of the Aletsch glacier. A quiet evening in front of the fire is the perfect end to the weekend and much needed rest in preparation for Monday.
||Breakfast followed by a 30 minute drive up the valley through the picturesque world heritage site of Goms. We will load people and kit on to a snowmobile where we are whisked through the snow laden forests. At the top of the tree line we will transfer into a snow cat for the remainder of the journey to the Grimsel Pass. The remote mountain pass of undulating snow regularly receives the highest snowfall in Switzerland. The vast expanse of open slopes provides a heavenly playground for snow kiters. Being so remote yet accessible you will rarely see another soul. The day is spent snow kiting the pass with the option of hot chocolate and lunch in one of the most remote hotels in Switzerland. At the end of the day the 40 minute free-ride back to the valley provides an opportunity to enjoy the views and contemplate the day.
Breakfast and then depending on your train time we will transfer you to Brig train station.
The above itinerary is an example of a short break .
